- Federal regulations are pushing states to adopt direct-recording electronic (DRE) voting. Are the machines ready for prime time? Or are they putting individual voting rights and the integrity of our entire electoral process at risk? Opponents of DREs say they fail to provide basic constitutional protections and have critical security shortcomings. But, proponents counter that the changes detractors demand would throw the baby out with the bathwater. Will e-voting have worked out its kinks by the 2008 elections?
